Lucknow: Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (DrRMLIMS), Lucknow, has launched an Integrated Multispecialty Poison Information Centre (PIC), a dedicated facility aimed at providing expert guidance and immediate assistance in cases of poisoning. The centre has been established to respond to a wide range of toxicological emergencies, including exposure to plant poisons, pesticides, medicines, drugs, chemical substances and snake bites.
The centre was formally inaugurated in the presence of Dr C. M. Singh, Director, DrRMLIMS, who graced the occasion as the chief guest. Emphasising the critical role of the initiative, Dr Singh highlighted that the Poison Information Centre would serve as a vital life-saving resource, strengthening emergency response and promoting public safety across the region.
Designed as a 24×7 service, the centre will provide round-the-clock expert advice not only to healthcare professionals but also to the general public, ensuring timely and accurate information during medical emergencies. With a modern infrastructure and the support of trained toxicologists, the facility aims to improve the management of poisoning cases, enhance early intervention and significantly reduce preventable fatalities.
The initiative has been jointly undertaken by the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, in collaboration with the departments of Emergency Medicine, General Medicine, Pediatrics, Community Medicine, Pharmacology, and Hospital Administration, reflecting a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach to poison control and patient care.

The primary objectives of the Poison Information Centre include providing affordable and life-saving poison control information, strengthening toxicology surveillance, facilitating timely treatment and referrals, and promoting poisoning prevention through awareness and education.
Members of the institute noted that the centre would play a crucial role in supporting both urban and rural populations, particularly in cases where quick access to specialised toxicological advice can make a decisive difference in patient outcomes.
